HIP 12961 ou Koeia est une étoile de type spectral M0V située à environ 75 années-lumière (23 pc) du Soleil dans la constellation de l'Éridan. Cette naine rouge est l'une des plus massives et des plus brillantes étoiles de type spectral M connues, avec respectivement 67 % et 10,1 % de la masse et de la luminosité du Soleil. Une exoplanète a été détectée fin 2009 autour de cette étoile par la méthode des vitesses radiales ; elle est désignée par HIP 12961 b.

It is receding with a radial velocity of +33 km/s and has a high proper motion, traversing the celestial sphere at an angular rate of 0.300″ yr−1. This was classified as a cool red dwarf star of stellar classification M0 in 1980, while C. B. Stephenson graded it as class K5V in 1986. The absolute magnitude and color index of this star is a closer match to the former. It shows a high chromospheric activity level and is one of the largest and brightest M class red dwarf stars known, with 64% of the mass and 63% of the radius of the Sun. The star is radiating 10% of the luminosity of the Sun from its photosphere at an effective temperature of 4,092 K. HIP 12961 is named Koeia. The name was selected in the NameExoWorlds campaign by Puerto Rico, during the 100th anniversary of the IAU. Koeia was the word for star in the language of the Taíno Indigenous People of the Caribbean. Tem uma magnitude aparente visual de 10,24, sendo invisível a olho nu. Com base em medições de paralaxe, do segundo lançamento do catálogo Gaia, está localizada a uma distância de 76,3 anos-luz (23,4 parsecs) da Terra. Esta estrela é uma anã vermelha com um tipo espectral de M0V e uma magnitude absoluta de 8,50. Possui uma massa equivalente a 64% da massa solar, um raio de 63% do raio solar e está brilhando com 7,6% da luminosidade solar. Seu conteúdo metálico é cerca de 25% maior que o solar. Em 2011, foi publicada a descoberta de um planeta extrassolar orbitando HIP 12961. Sua detecção foi feita por espectroscopia Doppler a partir de medições da velocidade radial da estrela pelo espectrógrafo HARPS.
