De geschiedenis van de Nederlandse televisie gaat terug tot in de jaren 1920, toen Philips experimenteerde met het uitzenden van filmbeelden. In 1951 begonnen de omroepverenigingen met uitzendingen voor televisie. In 1964 was de eerste commerciële televisiezender actief vanaf het REM-eiland. Legale commerciële zenders kwamen op na 1989, toen RTL-Véronique vanuit Luxemburg op de kabel werd toegelaten.
