The Howth gun-running (/ˈhoʊθ/ HOHTH) involved the delivery of 1,500 Mauser rifles to the Irish Volunteers at Howth harbour in Ireland on 26 July 1914. The unloading of guns from a private yacht during daylight hours attracted a crowd, and the authorities ordered police and military intervention. Despite this the Volunteers evaded the security forces and carried away the arms. As the King's Own Scottish Borderers returned to barracks, they were accosted by civilians at Bachelors Walk, who threw stones and exchanged insults with the regulars. In an event later termed the Bachelor's Walk massacre, the soldiers shot into the civilian crowd and bayoneted one man, resulting in the deaths of four civilians and wounding of at least 38. (en) Is é atá i gceist nuair a thagraítear do Thabhairt i dtír na ngunnaí i mBinn Éadair ná an ócáid sin arna seachadadh 1,500 raidhfil d’Óglaigh na hÉireann ag cuan Bhinn Éadair ar an 26 Iúil 1914. Tarraingíodh aird slua mhóir ar an tabhairt i dtír agus na gunnaí á ndí-ualú ó luamh príobháideach le solas an lae, agus d’ordaigh na húdaráis go n-idirghabhfadh na póilíní agus an t-arm araon san eachtra. D’éirigh leis na hÓglaigh na fórsaí slándála a sheachaint, áfach. Chuir saoránaigh aighneas ar reisimint darbh ainm the King’s Own Scottish Borderers ar agus na saighdiúirí sin ag filleadh ar ais go dtí a mbeairicí. Chaith siad clocha agus maslaí leo. Scaoil na saighdiúirí leis an slua nach raibh airm acu agus sháigh siad fear amháin le beaignit, rud a d’fhág gur maraíodh ceathrar saoránach agus gur gortaíodh ocht nduine is tríocha. (ga) |
