In biblical studies, inclusio is a literary device based on a concentric principle, also known as bracketing or an envelope structure, which consists of creating a frame by placing similar material at the beginning and end of a section, although whether this material should consist of a word or a phrase, or whether greater amounts of text also qualify, and of what length the frames section should be, are matters of some debate. Inclusio is found in various sources, both antique and new. The purpose of an inclusio may be structural - to alert the reader to a particularly important theme - or it may serve to show how the material within the inclusio relates to the inclusio itself. Il testo, che determina l'inclusione, può avere somiglianze sia di tipo linguistico (ripetizione di parole o frasi identiche o sinonime), sia di tipo contenutistico. Più inclusioni possono essere annidate, cioè inserite una dentro l'altra, organizzando così il testo secondo una struttura concentrica del tipo (nel caso particolare di quattro livelli di inclusione): A B C D X D' C' B' A', in cui X indica il centro della struttura, la parte di testo dotata della massima evidenza. La diffusa figura retorica del chiasmo rientra in questo schema in quanto è una struttura concentrica a due livelli priva di centro (A B B'A'). Le strutture concentriche sono molto comuni sia nelle antiche letterature semitiche (si trovano in testi accadici, ugaritici, biblici e talmudici) sia nella letteratura classica (Omero, Cicerone, ecc.). Nella Bibbia l'utilizzo di inclusioni e di strutture concentriche è molto diffuso sia a livello di microstruttura del testo (frase, paragrafo, ecc.) sia a livello "macro" (un intero libro o più libri).
