Als Schulsport bezeichnet man im Unterschied zum Hochschulsport, Betriebssport oder Freizeitsport die Gesamtheit der sport- und bewegungsbezogenen Aktivitäten, die im Rahmen der Institution Schule betrieben werden.Neben dem obligatorischen Sportunterricht gehören zum Schulsport auch freiwillige Arbeitsgemeinschaften bzw. , schulsportliche Wettkampfveranstaltungen, nationale Sportveranstaltungen, Sportfeste, Wandertage oder Klassenfahrten mit sportlichen Schwerpunkten (z. B. Skikurse, Radtouren), Pausensportangebote sowie überschulische Wettkampfangebote wie Jugend trainiert für Olympia oder der Unihockey Cup. The term, which is chiefly North American, derives from the Latin words intra muros meaning "within walls", and was used to describe sports matches and contests that took place among teams from "within the walls" of an institution or area. The term dates to the 1840s. It is contrasted with extramural, varsity or intercollegiate sports, which are played between teams from different educational institutions. Högre skolor kan ha ett lag, och skoltävlingar förekommer. Detta är bland annat vanligt i USA på high school och college. I till exempel Sverige hade många läroverk omfattande skolidrott under parallellskolsystemets dagar.
