Jean Baubérot (born 26 July 1941 in Châteauponsac, Haute-Vienne), is a French historian and sociologist specializing in sociology of religions. He is the founder of the sociology of secularism. After holding the chair of "History and Sociology of Protestantism" (1978–1990), he held the chair of "History and Sociology of secularism "(since 1991) at the École pratique des hautes études, where he was the honorary president. He wrote twenty books, including a historical novel. He is coauthor of the Déclaration internationale sur la laïcité, signed by 250 scholars from 30 countries.

Après avoir occupé la chaire d'Histoire et sociologie du protestantisme de 1978 à 1990, il devient titulaire de la chaire d'Histoire et sociologie de la laïcité de 1991 à 2007 à l’École pratique des hautes études dont il est actuellement le président d'honneur et professeur émérite. Il a écrit plus de trente ouvrages, dont un roman historique, a dirigé treize livres collectifs et a publié plus d'une centaine d'articles dans des revues à comité de lecture. Il est le coauteur d'une Déclaration internationale sur la laïcité signée par 250 universitaires de 30 pays. « Plume » de François Mitterrand pour les sujets concernant la laïcité, il a soutenu publiquement plusieurs candidats du Parti socialiste.
