In 1075 he with Roger de Beaumont was in effective charge of Normandy. He is known for his liturgical work Tractatus de officiis ecclesiasticis; it was officially adopted in the diocese of Rouen. It was written at the request of Maurilius, his predecessor as archbishop; it had only a limited impact in promoting uniformity in Normandy. Neveu du duc de Normandie, il est évêque d'Avranches (1060-1067) et joue un rôle de premier plan dans la réorganisation de l'Église dans l'ouest de la Normandie. Devenu archevêque de Rouen (1067-1079), il a conservé une place prééminente dans le royaume anglo-normand. Il est à l'origine de conciles réformateurs qui ont eu une grande importance dans le développement du droit canon dans le duché. Il a affiné les Acta archiepiscoporum Rotomagensium, un texte historiographique commencé par son prédécesseur, une des rares sources contemporaines sur l'archidiocèse de Rouen et ses archevêques. Conseiller principal du duc-roi Guillaume le Conquérant, il est en partie chargé de l'administration du duché de Normandie en son absence. Il aura entretenu au cours de ses ministères une relation de respect mutuel et d'échange avec l'archevêque de Cantorbéry Lanfranc. Prélat infatigable, il a affronté les établissements monastiques de la province sur les questions de juridiction archiépiscopale ; les anecdotes qui nous sont parvenues à son sujet ont laissé l'image d'un homme fier et entêté.
