La Libre Esthétique (French; "The Free Aesthetics") was an artistic society founded in 1893 in Brussels, Belgium to continue the efforts of the artists' group Les XX dissolved the same year. To reduce conflicts between artists invited or excluded, artists were no longer admitted to the society, thus all exhibitors were now invited. The first annual exhibition was opened on 14 February 1894, and the exhibition of 1914 was the last: a year later German troops had occupied Belgium, Brussels included.

Initiatiefnemer en mecenas was de Brusselse jurist Octave Maus, die ook de gangmaker van Les XX was geweest. Spreekbuis bleef Maus' tijdschrift L' Art Moderne. Maus had de touwtjes ditmaal strakker in handen: in het bestuur van La Libre Esthétique zaten geen kunstenaars: zij werden slechts geïnviteerd. De eerste tentoonstelling van La Libre Esthétique vond plaats op 14 februari 1894. De laatste was in 1914, het jaar waarin België ten prooi viel aan de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Plannen om de salon na de oorlog voort te zetten werden door Maus' overlijden in 1919 niet verwezenlijkt. Bij de jaarlijkse salons werd werk geëxposeerd van kunstenaars uit allerlei actuele stromingen, onder wie Paul Gauguin, Eugène Laermans, Gisbert Combaz, Fritz Thaulow, Émile Claus, James Ensor, Guillaume Vogels, Henri-Edmond Cross, Théo van Rysselberghe, Willy Schlobach, Odilon Redon, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Fernand Khnopff, William Degouve de Nuncques, Maurice Denis, Paul-Élie Ranson en Henri-Gabriel Ibels. Behalve tentoonstellingen van beeldende kunst en kunstnijverheid organiseerde La Libre Esthétique ook concerten rond contemporaine componisten. De grote violist Eugène Ysaÿe en zijn broer de pianist , beiden ook componist, sloten zich aan bij de groep. Tijdens de eerste salon in 1894 werd een festival gewijd aan Claude Debussy. Entrambi i gruppi, fondati da Octave Maus, rappresentarono le tendenze artistiche più all'avanguardia seppur con differenti poetiche. La Libre Esthétique fu creata con lo scopo di allestire grandi mostre annuali di arte contemporanea internazionale di ogni tipo, che vennero organizzate dal 1894 al 1813, sempre corredate da un ampio catalogo.Lo statuto dell'associazione prevedeva la partecipazione di tutte le arti per le sue esposizioni annuali, ma escludeva gli artisti dalla possibilità di esserne membri, questo per evitare che si creassero sovrapposizioni di ruoli. Il punto di forza de La Libre Esthétique era l'internazionalizzazione dell'estetica contemporanea, illustrare le sue variazioni su scala europea, le ricerche e le deviazioni, al fine di consentire un giudizio critico sul suo sviluppo. Oltre alle mostre di arti visive e artigianato, La Libre Esthétique organizzava anche concerti di compositori contemporanei, come il violinista Eugène Ysaÿe e il pianista , fratelli musicisti ed anche compositori. Durante la prima esposizione del 1894, fu organizzato un festival dedicato a Claude Debussy e fu tenuta una conferenza da Henry van de Velde intitolata L'art futur (L'arte futura). La prima esposizione si tenne dal 17 febbraio al 15 marzo 1894, vari furono gli artisti partecipanti, tra cui:Aubrey Beardsley, Eugène Carrière, Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Henri-Edmond Cross, William Degouve de Nuncques, Maurice Denis, James Ensor, Paul Gauguin, Henri-Gabriel Ibels, Fernand Khnopff, Berthe Morisot, William Morris, Camille Pissarro, Paul-Elie Ranson, Odilon Redon, Auguste Renoir, Théo van Rysselberghe, Jan Toorop, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Guillaume Vogels e George Frederic Watts. Successivamente vi esposero, anche: Paul Cézanne, Eugène Laermans, Émile Claus, , Alfred Sisley. L'ultimo salon organizzato da La Libre Esthétique fu nel 1914, anno in cui il Belgio cadde in preda alla prima guerra mondiale. (it)
