Unter dem Begriff Apostolat versteht man das Amt der Apostel und damit auch die Sendung der Kirche. Der in der römisch-katholischen Kirche übliche Begriff Laienapostolat, auch Apostolat genannt, bezieht sich meist auf den Bereich der tätigen Nächstenliebe und Verkündigung. Laien erfüllen die erste und hauptsächliche Sendung der Kirche, wenn sie ganz aus und in dem Mysterium Christi leben. Dabei gibt es mehrere Sphären: die persönliche Innerlichkeit in Glauben, Liebe, Hoffnung; darüber hinaus wirkt der Christ in seiner christlichen Familie, die eine Kirche im Kleinen darstellt und sich an den öffentlichen Lebensvollzügen der Kirche beteiligt; schließlich kann sich der Laie an der Verkündigung des Glaubens, der Gottesverehrung und der Caritas im Dienst am Nächsten beteiligen. Lay apostolate organizations operate under the general oversight of pastors and bishops, but need not be dependent upon them for direction. The laity can exercise a fruitful apostolate by their conduct in the areas of their labor, profession, studies, neighborhood, and social life. And according to the Vatican II Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity, they will look for opportunities to announce Christ to their neighbors through the spoken word as well (AA 13).
