Ses habitants sont appelés les Chaytais et les Chaytaises. Localisée aux confins des grandes champagnes agricoles saintongeaises, dans la frange continentale de la côte de Beauté, cette petite bourgade ayant conservé une allure champêtre a pour atout sa grande proximité avec Saujon, petite ville en plein essor, ce qui a entraîné un accroissement du phénomène de périurbanisation. Très attachée à la ruralité, Le Chay appartient à la sphère d'influence urbaine de Royan, principal centre économique du sud-ouest du département. L'activité économique est tournée vers le tourisme, secteur favorisé par la présence des stations balnéaires du pays royannais, ainsi que vers l'agriculture, l'artisanat et les services à la personne et aux entreprises. Le patrimoine communal, relativement discret, est constitué par une petite église dédiée à saint Martin (XIXe siècle) et par plusieurs maisons traditionnelles saintongeaises, dites « charentaises ». Le Chay appartient à la Communauté d'agglomération Royan Atlantique, structure intercommunale rassemblant 81 036 habitants (2013).
