He was the younger brother of Li Shucheng. Born in Hubei Province, he studied abroad in Japan from 1902 to 1918, graduating from University of Tokyo. He was fluent in Japanese, English, French and German. Although a founding member of the Chinese Communist Party, he later left the party after coming into conflict with Zhang Guotao and joined the Kuomintang. An opponent of Chiang Kai-shek's anti-Communist campaign, he fled to the Japanese concession in Hankou when Chiang's supporters entered Wuhan in November 1927. Il est enseignant du marxisme et traduit en chinois le Capital C'est dans sa maison du quartier de Shikumen de la concession française de Shanghai, qu'à eu lieu la fondation du parti communiste chinois en 1921, lors du 1er congrès national du Parti communiste chinois. Il a pour frère (en) (李書城), un des principaux cadre du Kuomintang, dirigeant la république de Chine. Il est l'auteur de différents ouvrages sur le marxisme, dont une introduction à l'ouvrage Capital de Karl Marx intitulé « Introduction au Capital de Marx » (马克思资本论入门).
