Die Extensivrinderrasse Luing (Rasseschlüssel LG 50) wurde auf der schottischen Insel Luing ab dem Jahr 1947 von den Brüdern Shane, Denis und Ralph Cadzow gezüchtet. Ihren Ursprung hat diese Rinderrasse im Beef Shorthorn und dem Highland Cattle. Die rotbraunen Luing, welche 1965 als eigenständige Rasse anerkannt wurden, erreichen eine Widerristhöhe von 125 cm, wobei die Bullen durchaus ein Gewicht von 950 kg erreichen können. In Großbritannien steht die Rasse auf der Beobachtungsliste des britischen Rare Breeds Survival Trust.

Na počátku stál masný anglický krátkorohý skot, který byl zkřížen se skotským náhorním skotem, kříženky byly dále zapouštěné highlandy a vzniklá populace se dále selektovala na masnou užitkovost. Plemeno bylo uznáno v roce 1965. Je to skot středního tělesného rámce, pevné konstituce a dobrého osvalení. Trup zvířat je hluboký, končetiny spíše kratší, zvířata jsou rohatá, ale do některých stád byla přikřížena bezrohá plemena. Srst je dlouhá, zbarvení je nejčastěji červenohnědé nebo tmavohnědé, část zvířat je červeně plesnivá. Je nenáročný, vhodný i do drsného klimatu a k celoroční pastvě. Mateřské vlastnosti i mléčnost krav jsou výborné, snadno se telí, zvířata jsou dlouhověká a kvalita masa dobrá. Kromě čistokrevné plemenitby přinášejí dobré výsledky též s masným simentálem, limousinským či charolaiským skotem i s dalšími masnými plemeny. It was formed by first crossbreeding Beef Shorthorn with Highland cattle and then breeding the resulting progeny with Beef Shorthorns to produce an animal three quarters Beef Shorthorn, one quarter Highland. The breed of red-brown cattle are moderately sized and extremely hardy. The intent was to produce a good beef cow with the ability to raise a calf under adverse weather conditions. It was officially recognised as a breed by the British government in 1965. The breed is still farmed today, mainly in Scotland but also in other areas of the world.
