LyondellBasell Industries N.V. is a multinational chemical company incorporated in the Netherlands with U.S. operations headquartered in Houston, Texas, and offices in London, UK. The company is the largest licensor of polyethylene and polypropylene technologies. It also produces ethylene, propylene, polyolefins, and oxyfuels. LyondellBasell was formed in December 2007 by the acquisition of Lyondell Chemical Company by Basell Polyolefins for $12.7 billion. As of 2016, Lyondell was the third largest independent chemical manufacturer in the United States.

Nei primi mesi del 2010, infatti, venne annunciata la volontà di chiudere e smantellare il sito ternano: il 30 giugno 2010 la produzione è stata interrotta, sebbene sia ripresa qualche giorno dopo le proteste degli operai e a seguito di un incontro trilaterale tra azienda, sindacati e i vertici del Ministero dello sviluppo economico. Permanendo comunque l'intenzione di LyondellBasell di dismettere le attività umbre entro il 30 giugno 2011, la chiusura definitiva è avvenuta nel 2012.
