Melchtal is the valley of the Grosse Melchaa in the canton Obwalden, Switzerland. The hamlet located in the valley is also named Melchtal. Most of the valley is included in the municipality of Kerns; the Melchaa constitutes the limit with Sachseln. It is supposed to be the birthplace of the historical-mythical figure Arnold von Melchtal.

Bekannt ist der Name auch als vermeintlicher Herkunftsort des Arnold von Melchtal, der im Gründungsmythos der Schweiz als einer der drei Gründerväter beim Rütlischwur auftaucht. Das Melchtal verläuft in süd-nördlicher Richtung und wird im Norden, bevor es in das Sarneraatal zweigt, durch eine Schlucht abgeschlossen, die auf der Höhe der Ortschaft Flüeli-Ranft auch Ranftschlucht genannt wird und ein Stück weiter von der Hohen Brücke überspannt wird. Zahlreiche Touristen durchfahren das Tal von Kerns zur , von wo eine Seilbahn und im Sommer auch eine Bergstrasse zum Sommer- und Wintersportort Melchsee-Frutt führt. Le Melchtal s’étend du bourg de Kerns situé dans la vallée entre le lac de Sarnen et le lac des Quatre-Cantons vers le sud jusqu’à Stöckalp au fin fond du Melchtal. De là, une télécabine mène à la haute vallée verdoyante de Melchsee-Frutt. Le lieu de pèlerinage pittoresque de Melchtal abrite le couvent des Bénédictines Saint Nicolas de Flue, dédié à cet ermite appelé « Bruder Klaus ».
