Melton je vlněná tkanina z česané příze v osnově a z mykaného útku. Látka se tká v plátnové nebo keprové vazbě s poměrně řídkou dostavou a upravuje speciální apreturou. Meltonová apretura spočívá v tom, že se tkanina po obou stranách valchuje, z takto vzniklé plsti odstraní postřihováním odstávající “divoká” vlákna a dekatováním fixuje stejnoměrný povrch. Lehčí meltonové tkaniny se používají na pánské obleky, těžší na pánské a dámské pláště.

Fischgratköper) gefertigtes Gewebe, das durch eine spezielle Ausrüstung, die sogenannte Meltonausrüstung, einen festen zusammenhängenden Faserflor auf beiden Gewebeseiten erhält, so dass das Bindungsbild meist nicht mehr zu erkennen ist. Melton besteht aus Wollgarnen in Kette und Schuss oder aus einer Baumwoll-Kette und einem Woll-Schuss. Man unterscheidet leichten, mittelschweren und schweren Melton.Der leichte Melton ist auch unter der Bezeichnung Wollflanell bekannt. Er wird überwiegend als Breitgradköper K 2/2 gewebt. Seine Flächenmasse liegt zwischen 200 und 250 g/m². Der mittelschwere Melton weist eine Flächenmasse von ca. 250 bis 320 g/m² auf. Als Bindung wird ebenfalls der Breitgradköper K2/2 oder Kreuzköper verwendet. Schwerer Melton hat eine Flächenmasse über 320 g/m² und wird aus fülligen Streichgarnen in Breitgradköperbindung erzeugt. It is a very solid cloth in which the twill weave pattern is completely concealed due to the finishing processes. Because of its dense, quasi-felted texture it frays minimally or not at all. It is hard wearing and wind and weather resistant. Its main use is for heavy outer garments and coats and for blankets. In lighter weights melton cloth is traditionally used for lining the underside of jacket collars. It was developed in the Leicestershire town of Melton Mowbray, from which it derives its name. This town is the traditional centre of English fox-hunting, and black and scarlet hunting coats are traditionally made from melton cloth, due to its weatherproof qualities. In England not only is melton used for the scarlet hunting coat, an iconic symbol of the upper-class elite, but it is also used in black for the donkey jacket, an iconic symbol of the working class labouring man. Both uses rely on its weatherproof qualities. Melton cloth is also used as the covering for real tennis balls.
