Merle Hoffman (original) (raw)
- مرلي هوفمان (بالإنجليزية: Merle Hoffman) هي ناشرة أمريكية، ولدت في 6 مارس 1946. (ar)
- Merle Hoffman (born March 6, 1946) is an American journalist, activist, and healthcare pioneer. Shortly after New York State legalized abortion in 1970, three years before the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion nationally, Hoffman helped establish one of the country's first ambulatory abortion centers, Flushing Women's Medical Center in 1971. It was the forerunner of Choices Women's Medical Center which Hoffman founded and serves as president and CEO. Today Choices is one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive women's medical facilities, providing abortion services to 24 weeks of pregnancy, birth control, gynecology, prenatal care, counseling services, telemedicine, and specialized care for teens and the LGBTQ community, along with extensive educational outreach to schools, prisons, and women's organizations. Hoffman co-founded the National Abortion Federation in 1976, the first professional organization of abortion providers in the U.S., and was its first president. She also founded the New York Pro-Choice Coalition in 1985. Hoffman is the publisher of On the Issues magazine, which began as a print publication in 1983 and then became an online publication in 2008. She was awarded the Front Page Award for Political Commentary in 2010 from the Newswoman's Club of New York. Through the years she has been a leader in supporting women’s reproductive choice and opposing attacks on abortion rights and access. She developed pathbreaking Out-of-Town services at Choices in 2015, reaching out to women and girls in states with abortion restrictions and helping with travel arrangements and raising funds for their procedures at Choices. She also developed one of the first Trans Care programs in the country in 2016. In January 2022 when the US Supreme Court indicated it was on track to overturn the Roe decision, Hoffman joined with others to initiate RiseUp4AbortionRights.org which called for and organized massive nationwide demonstrations in the streets to prevent abortion from being outlawed, with the slogan Abortion on Demand and Without Apology. After Roe was overturned in June 2022, she joined others in calling for the Federal Government to legalize abortion nationwide. (en)
