Er war von 2000 bis 2003 stellvertretender Vorsitzender des Zentralrats der Juden in Deutschland und Herausgeber der Wochenzeitung Jüdische Allgemeine sowie von 2001 bis 2003 Präsident des Europäischen Jüdischen Kongresses, bis er im Zuge der „Friedman-Affäre“ alle öffentlichen Ämter niederlegte. Er moderierte mehrere Talksendungen, zum Beispiel von 1998 bis 2003 beim Hessischen Rundfunk oder von 2004 bis 2021 Studio Friedman beim Sender N24 (heute Welt). Seit 2016 ist er Honorarprofessor für Immobilien- und Medienrecht an der Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences.
