Das 1912 fertiggestellte Bauwerk ist ebenfalls ein wichtiger Ort der Erinnerung an den faschistischen Terror, da hier auch Antifaschisten und Juden gefangen gehalten worden sind, zum Teil einen grausamen Tod fanden oder in Lager transportiert wurden. Unter jenen befand sich im Sommer 1943 auch der Schriftsteller Giorgio Bassani. Seit 2010 organisiert das Museum jährlich die Festa del libro ebraico in Italia. Außerdem beteiligt es sich wie der römische und einigen anderen Institutionen an der Sammlung von Materialien und Dokumenten zur Schoah namens Storia di famiglie. It opened in 2017, and traces the history of the Jewish people in Italy starting from the Roman empire through the Holocaust of the 20th century. Chartered by the Italian government in 2003, MEIS contains over 200 artifacts and exhibits that proceed chronologically through the periods of Jewish history in Italy. The museum is continuing to expand through the year 2021. (en) Il Museo nazionale dell'ebraismo italiano e della Shoah (in sigla: MEIS), dedicato alla storia degli ebrei e della Shoah in Italia, si trova a Ferrara in Via Piangipane 81, adiacente all'antica cinta muraria rinascimentale, nel tratto dei Rampari di San Paolo. Tale edificio, sino al 1992, è stato utilizzato come carcere cittadino. Il progetto del MEIS nasce nel 2003 con la legge parlamentare (poi emendata nel 2006) “quale testimonianza delle vicende che hanno caratterizzato la bimillenaria presenza ebraica in Italia”. La città prescelta è stata Ferrara, dove si è sviluppata una delle comunità ebraiche più antiche e fiorenti d’Europa. La Fondazione MEIS è stata istituita dal Ministero della Cultura, che ne è socio fondatore, ed ha - quali Enti partecipanti - la Regione Emilia-Romagna, il Comune di Ferrara e l’Unione delle Comunità Ebraiche Italiane (UCEI). Presidente della Fondazione è dal dicembre 2015 Dario Disegni. Fanno parte del Consiglio di Amministrazione: Gloria Arbib, Daniele Mezzetti, Giovanni Franco Pernisa e Daniele Ravenna.
