National Service (NS) is the national policy in Singapore mandated by statutory law that requires all male Singaporean citizens and second-generation permanent residents to serve a period of compulsory service in the uniformed services. It was first instituted in 1967 to help build Singapore's armed forces soon after the country gained independence in 1965, and has since been expanded to involve the police force and civil defence force as well. Upon enlistment, male citizens and second-generation permanent residents serve two years in active duty as full-time national servicemen (NSFs) in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Police Force (SPF) or Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), following which they transit to an operationally-ready reservist state as operationally-ready national servicemen (NSmen). A two-month reduction in full-time national service is offered to all pre-enlistees who are able to pass their three-station Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) consisting of push-ups, sit-ups and a 2.4 km (1.5 mi) run, with a minimum of 61 points. Before April 2015, the IPPT consisted of six stations: the 2.4 km (1.5 mi) run, sit-ups, pull-ups, standing-broad jump, sit-and-reach stretch and shuttle-run. The majority of NSFs serve in the Army. The reasons for this include the relative manpower needs of the Army compared to the Navy (RSN), Air Force (RSAF), Police Force and Civil Defence Force. Moreover, as compared to the Army, the Air Force and Navy are smaller armed services composed primarily of regular servicemen. As the manpower requirements of the Navy and Air Force tend to be more specialised, the constant periodic turnover of NSFs is considered to be very disruptive. The statutory age cap for reservist obligations is 40 for warrant officers, specialists and enlistees (collectively known as WOSEs) and 50 for commissioned officers. (en)
Wajib militer di Singapura atau Perkhidmatan Negara (bahasa Inggris: National Service, singkatan: NS) adalah suatu kewajiban untuk para pria penyandang Warga Negara Singapura dan izin tinggal tetap generasi kedua setelah mencapai usia 18 tahun. Mereka yang diharuskan menjalani wajib militer sepenuh waktu (disebut Full Time National Servicemen, NSF) selama dua tahun akan berdinas di Angkatan Bersenjata Singapura (Singapore Armed Forces, SAF), Kepolisian Singapura (Singapore Police Force, SPF), atau Pasukan Pertahanan Sipil Singapura (Singapore Civil Defence Force, SCDF). Apabila seseorang yang wajib mengikuti wamil ini sudah selesai menjalani dinasnya secara penuh, maka dia dianggap "sedia beroperasi", dan setelah itu dikenal sebagai Operationally-Ready National Serviceman (NSman) atau seorang Pedinas Nasional yang siap beroperasi. Para NSman ini mirip dengan reservis atau pasukan cadangan di negara lain. Mereka berjumlah sekitar 80% dari total jumlah angkatan bersenjata Singapura. Mereka menjadi tulang punggung Angkatan Bersenjata Singapura. Mayoritas para pewamil ini bertugas di Angkatan Darat. Alasannya ialah karena AD membutuhkan tenaga lebih banyak daripada AL, AU, Kepolisian Singapura ataupun angkatan lainnya. Setiap tahun, para pewamil ini dipilih untuk melalui latihan tahap tinggi atau rendah sampai mencapai usia 40 atau 50 tahun, tergantung pada pangkat mereka. Latihan intensif atau 'tahap tinggi' melibatkan operasi dalam Latihan Dalam Markas (In-Camp Training, ICT) selama tujuh hari atau lebih, sementara latihan 'tahap rendah' pula memaksudkan sesi latihan selama enam hari ke bawah. Singapura termasuk salah satu negara di mana masa wajib militer melebihi 18 bulan dan sesudahnya ada usia wajib sebagai prajurit cadangan sampai 40 untuk pangkat rendah dan 50 tahun untuk para perwira. Sebelum bulan Juni 2004, Singapura bahkan memiliki wamil sampai 30 bulan. Pada dasawarsa 1960-an dan 1970-an, para perwira ini bahkan diwajibkan untuk bertugas selama 36 bulan atau tiga tahun untuk mempersiapkan mereka menduduki jabatan kepemimpinan. (in)
新加坡国民服役（英語：National Service，略称“NS”）是新加坡公民及部分青年永久居民的一项公民义务。该制度由1967年起实施，强制所有年满18岁及以上的新加坡男性公民及“二代男性永久居民”（在学生时代获授绿卡的一代永久居民通常也被当地归类为二代永久居民）为国服役。身体和精神检查合格者会經歷為期至少九周，多则十数周的成为全职的现役军人（National Service Full-Time, NSF），畢業後分配到新加坡共和国武装部队（SAF）、新加坡警察部队（SPF）或（SCDF）下属各单位，役期一般为24个月，期間可獲發放。已獲本地公立高等学府如理工学院（Poly) 或政府本科院校如新加坡国立大学（NUS）、南洋理工大学（NTU）取錄的學生可申请延期入伍，或选择半途中断学业，兵役期间保留其学位待退伍后回校继续完成。 役期满后，退伍军人将被编入战备军成为“战备军人”（Operationally-Ready National Serviceman, NSman），战备军人通常每年被征召进行为期最少一周，最长五、六周的复训，并确保每年的体检和体能测验能夠合格，一般军衔者为期约10年，直至年滿40歲正式屆齡退役。军衔较高、具有较高军事指挥权者复训周期则较前者长约10年，多在50歲正式屆齡退役。依新加坡法律，逃避兵役者最高刑罰為監禁3年兼罰款1萬星幣。 另外如果有服役的是大專專業人士，國防部會安排他們大學畢業後參與專業的兵役。例如醫科大學生成為軍醫。 (zh)
