Der im heutigen Maine geborene Nehemiah Abbott studierte Jura an der in Connecticut. Nach seiner Aufnahme in die Anwaltschaft im Jahr 1836 praktizierte Abbott als Anwalt in Calais, Maine. Im Jahr 1839 zog er nach Columbus im Bundesstaat Mississippi und setzte seine Anwaltstätigkeit dort fort. 1840 kehrte er nach Maine zurück und ließ sich in Belfast im Waldo County nieder. In den Jahren 1842, 1843 und 1845 gehörte Abbott dem Repräsentantenhaus von Maine an. Er wurde als Republikaner in den 35. Kongress gewählt und vertrat dort im US-Repräsentantenhaus den Bundesstaat Maine vom 4. März 1857 bis zum 3. März 1859. Nach seiner Abgeordnetenlaufbahn wurde Abbott wieder als Anwalt tätig. 1865 und 1866 war er Bürgermeister von Belfast. He was born in Sidney, studied law at the Litchfield, Connecticut Law School, was admitted to the bar in 1836 and began his practice at Calais, Maine. In 1839 Abbott moved to Columbus, Mississippi, where he continued the practice of law, but the following year he returned to Maine and settled in Belfast, Waldo County, where he resumed the practice of law. In 1842 and 1843 he was a member of the Maine House of Representatives. He was elected as a Republican to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving from March 4, 1857, to March 3, 1859. He did not run for reelection, but continued to practice law, and served as the mayor of Belfast in 1865 and 1866. He died in Belfast. (en) |
