A parent education program is a course that can be followed to correct and improve a person's parenting skills. Such courses may be general, covering the most common issues parents may encounter, or specific, for infants, toddlers, children and teenagers. These courses may also be geared towards parents who are considering having a child, or adopting one, or are pregnant. Some parent education programs are: * Parent Effectiveness Training is based on person-centered psychotherapy. * Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) is based on individual psychology.

L’éducation parentale est, selon Pourtois (1984), une activité volontaire d’apprentissage de la part de parents qui souhaitent améliorer les interactions nouées avec leur enfant, pour encourager l’émergence de comportements jugés positifs et réduire celle de comportements jugés négatifs. Pour Terrisse (1997), elle a pour but d’aider les parents à mieux actualiser leurs potentialités éducatives, en développant leur sentiment de compétence et en utilisant le mieux possible les ressources que leur offre leur environnement. L’éducation parentale comprend les mesures prises par l'État afin de la promouvoir, soit en donnant plus de temps aux parents pour éduquer leurs enfants, soit en leur proposant une initiation ou une formation.
