Passion és un musical adaptat de la pel·lícula d'Ettore Scola (que alhora estava basada en la novel·la Fosca d'). El llibret és de , amb lletres i música de Stephen Sondheim. El subjecte central inclou l'obsessió, la bellesa, el poder, la manipulació, la passió i l'amor. Parcialment és una obra epistolar, car parts de la història són narrades mitjançant cartes. Situada a Itàlia durant el segle xix, el musical de Sondheim tracta al voltant d'un soldat, Giorgio, que es troba afectat i finalment canviat per l'amor incondicional i obsessiu de Fosca, la cosina lletja i malalta del seu coronel. Durant tota l'obra, Giorgio s'escriu amb la seva bella (però casada) amant Clara. Passion is a one-act musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. The story was adapted from Ettore Scola's 1981 film Passione d'Amore, and its source material, Iginio Ugo Tarchetti's 1869 novel Fosca. Central themes include love, sex, obsession, illness, passion, beauty, power and manipulation. Passion is notable for being one of the few projects that Stephen Sondheim himself conceived, along with Sweeney Todd and Road Show. Set in Risorgimento-era Italy, the plot concerns a young soldier and the changes in him brought about by the obsessive love of Fosca, his Colonel's homely, ailing cousin. (en)

Ambientato in un avamposto militare nell'Italia del XIX secolo, il musical narra delle esperienze di Giorgio, giovane militare, e del suo incontro con Fosca, una donna molto malata che sviluppa una morbosa attrazione per lui. Il musical tratta argomenti quali: amore, bellezza, potere, desiderio, malattia e morte. Il musical è noto anche per essere l'unico musical epistolare, in cui la trama è rivelata dalle lettere tra Giorgio, Fosca, Clara ed il dottor Tambourri. (it)
