Von September 2009 bis Februar 2010 vertrat er den Bundesstaat Massachusetts als ernannter Nachfolger des verstorbenen Edward Kennedy im US-Senat. From 1985 to 1989, he chaired the Democratic National Committee (DNC). He served as co-chairman of the Commission on Presidential Debates, the chairman of the board of directors of the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation, and a member of the board of directors of the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate. (en)
