phpGroupWare est un collecticiel libre développé dans le cadre du projet GNU et distribué selon les termes de la licence publique générale GNU. Le logiciel de groupe de travail repose sur plusieurs briques d'applications Web écrites en PHP dans le but de faciliter le travail en groupe, son organisation et sa communication.

Das Projekt wurde mit Hilfe der Skriptsprache PHP realisiert, welche für die Datenhaltung auf eine MySQL- oder PostgreSQL-Datenbank zurückgreift. Folgende Basisanwendungen sind enthalten: * E-Mail (ein Mailserver vorausgesetzt) * Kalender * Adressbuch * Bookmarks * Chat * Forum * Notizen * Aufgaben * Projektmanagement * Helpdesk / Trouble Ticket System Im Jahr 2003 spalteten einige Entwickler das Projekt und entwickelten es unter dem Namen EGroupware (als solches nun proprietär aufgelegt) weiter. Das System kann (mit Einschränkungen) durchaus als Alternative zu Microsoft Exchange Server oder Lotus Notes gesehen werden. Während die beiden kommerziellen Softwarepakete allerdings eine Mailserversoftware mitliefern, ist PHPGroupware auf einen vorhandenen Mailserver (sendmail oder ähnliches) angewiesen, um alle Leistungsmerkmale bieten zu können. It provides about 50 web-based applications including a Calendar, Addressbook, an advanced Projects manager, Todo List, Email, and File manager. The calendar supports repeating events and includes alarm functions. The email system supports inline graphics and file attachments. The system as a whole supports user preferences, themes, user permissions, multi-language support and user groups. It includes modules to set up and administer the working environment. The groupware suite is based on an advanced Application Programming Interface (API). phpGroupWare is released under the GNU GPL 2+.
