Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), or equine Cushing's disease, is an endocrine disease affecting the pituitary gland of horses. It is most commonly seen in older animals, and is classically associated with the formation of a long, wavy coat (hirsutism) and chronic laminitis.

Als Hauptursache für das ECS gilt ein (altersbedingter) Tumor in der Hirnanhangsdrüse Adenohypophyse (sekundärer Cushing). Als solche entspricht die Erkrankung dem als "Morbus Cushing" bezeichneten und oft fälschlich mit dem "Cushing-Syndrom" gleichgesetzten Formenkreis beim Menschen. Bei Pferden liegt eher selten ein Tumor der Nebennierenrinde (primärer Cushing, Hyperadrenokortizismus) als Ursache vor. In der angelsächsischen Veterinärmedizin wird die bei Pferden prävalente Form des ECS aufgrund ihrer Lokalisation im Mittelteil (latein. pars intermedia) des Vorderlappens der Hypophyse (latein. "glandula pituitaria") zur Abgrenzung von anderen Erkrankungen mit ähnlichem Erscheinungsbild als PPID (Pituitary Pars Intermedia Dysfunction) präzisiert. La DPIP est une maladie d’apparition spontanée et d’évolution progressive caractérisée par une hypertrophie et une hyperplasie de la pars intermedia de l’hypophyse. Les chevaux atteints présentent des concentrations de dopamine inférieures à celle des chevaux sains et des concentrations circulantes supérieures de peptides POMC tels que la mélanocortine (α-MSH), la ß-endorphine (ß-END), le CLIP (corticotrophin-like intermediate peptide), ainsi que d’ACTH. Le syndrome de Cushing toucherait 15 % des chevaux et des poneys de plus de 15 ans. Les signes cliniques de la DPIP sont plus ou moins marqués et incluent : hirsutisme, hypersudation, polyurie/polydipsie, baisse de tonus et fonte musculaire donnant un aspect « gros ventre », distribution anormale des masses grasses, fourbure et immunosuppression. La syndrome de Cushing nécessite un traitement quotidien à vie. Le pergolide est depuis plusieurs années considéré comme le traitement de référence.
