It is a highly urbanized area (8,700 inhabitants per square kilometer) with few monuments or sites of interest, but the area contains notable buildings like the Departmental archives of Doubs and the Statue of Diversity. Situé au sud-ouest de la ville, il est au cœur d’un site de 3,5 km² ceinturé par quatre forêts (Planoise, Monsieur, Franois, et Pirey) et deux collines (Planoise et Rosemont), à environ 2 km du Doubs et 3,5 km du centre-ville. Il est limitrophe des Tilleroyes, de Saint-Ferjeux, et de Velotte au nord et à l’est, ainsi que des communes d'Avanne-Aveney, Grandfontaine-la Belle Étoile, et Franois au sud et à l’ouest. Le secteur est bien desservi par les transports en commun grâce au tramway et à plusieurs lignes de bus Ginko et d'agglomération, et se trouve également à un carrefour routier avec la rue de Dole/R.N.73 et la R.N.57. Il faisait administrativement partie du canton de Besançon-Planoise jusqu’en 2014 mais est désormais associé à celui de Besançon-1, relevant de la ville de Besançon pour tout le reste de son administration et de sa gestion. Les premières traces de vie durable sur place remontent au Moyen Âge, période de faible démographie champêtre et agricole qui perdurera jusqu'à la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Dans les années 1950 à 1980, la constitution d'un habitat récent de barres d'immeubles et de tours donne à Planoise son caractère définitivement citadin. Imaginé comme une ville nouvelle et satellite, devenu ZUP et ZUS, le quartier intramuros, axé autour des sous-divisions de Cassin, Île-de-France, et Franche-Comté, connait dès la fin des années 1980 de graves problématiques économiques et sociaux à l’instar de nombreuses cités similaires. Pourtant elle dénombre des atouts majeurs, avec un parc immobilier de plus de 8 000 appartements représentant 14 % des logements locaux, trois centres commerciaux et des zones franches réunissant une partie notable des entreprises bisontines du secondaire et tertiaire, ou encore un fort taux d’infrastructures publiques et sièges divers notamment dans l’enseignement, le sport, et la culture. Son extension géographique, nommée Grand Planoise, y inclut Châteaufarine, les Hauts du Chazal, la Malcombe, Micropolis, la zone industrielle de Planoise, ainsi que la colline de Planoise et celle du Rosemont, dont l’ensemble forme un pôle régional stratégique de premier plan. Ses habitants, appelés les Planoisiens, sont estimés à environ 21 000 personnes, affichant 17 % du total municipal ce qui en fait le quartier le plus peuplé de Besançon et une des entités urbaines les plus importantes en Franche-Comté. Cette population, sociologiquement très diverse, recense cependant quelques généralités, notamment sa jeunesse et son dynamisme, une correspondance massive à la classe populaire et moyenne avec un chômage élevé, l'appartenance à plus de cinquante groupes ethniques différents et une présence marquée de l'islam, ainsi qu'une tendance politique fondée sur une abstention nettement majoritaire et des scrutins bénéficiant à l’extrême-droite, à la gauche réformiste, et à l’extrême-gauche.
