Plionarctos est un genre d'ours fossiles endémique d'Amérique du Nord au Miocène et au Pliocène, ~ 10,3—3,3 Ma, existant depuis environ 7 millions d'années. Le genre (10,7-9,2 Ma) n'a précédé Plionarctos que de quelques milliers d'années, était un contemporain de ces ours et partageait leur habitat. Plionarctus a précédé et était également contemporain de (4,9 millions - 11 000 ans) et a partagé son habitat. Plionarctos est le plus ancien genre connu de la sous-famille des Tremarctinae, et on pense qu'il est ancestral du clade.
