Process and Reality is a book by Alfred North Whitehead, in which the author propounds a philosophy of organism, also called process philosophy. The book, published in 1929, is a revision of the Gifford Lectures he gave in 1927–28. We diverge from Descartes by holding that what he has described as primary attributes of physical bodies, are really the forms of internal relationships between actual occasions. Im Jahr 1979 wurde Prozess und Realität ins Deutsche übersetzt. Die äußerst anspruchsvolle Abhandlung befasst sich mit Fragen der Metaphysik, Naturphilosophie und Erkenntnistheorie. Im Gegensatz zur traditionellen „Subjektphilosophie“ und zu materialistischen Naturinterpretationen entwarf Whitehead ein System, in dem sich das Universum nicht aus Substanzen, aus einer passiven Materie, sondern aus elementaren, ineinander greifenden und miteinander verwobenen Prozessen und Relationen zusammensetzt. Eine Kosmologie als Untersuchung der Realität und der Relationen zwischen verschiedenen Aspekten des Seienden ist dieses Werk, weil Whitehead alle Mechanismen und Strukturen der Natur einschließlich des Menschen und seiner Kultur in seine metaphysische Theorie einbezog. Whitehead dachte die Welt als einen ganzheitlichen, strukturierten und schöpferischen Organismus, der den Menschen, die Welt und Gott harmonisch umfasst. Er legte hier das Fundament für sein „ontologisches Prinzip“, wonach es in der Wirklichkeit nichts gibt, was nicht aus ihren (atomistischen) Basisereignissen aufgebaut ist. Mit dem Abklingen des Fokus der Analytischen Philosophie auf die Sprache gewann die Metaphysik Whiteheads zum Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts hin zunehmend an Bedeutung, weil sie mit modernen Ansätzen in der Quantenphysik, der Systemtheorie und den Kognitionswissenschaften, den Forschungen in der Biologie oder der Ökologie, aber auch neuen Konzepten der Theologie in Einklang gebracht werden kann. In Prozess und Realität fällt auch Whiteheads berühmtes Zitat von der „Charakterisierung der philosophischen Tradition Europas“ als „einer Reihe von Fußnoten zu Platon“ (PR 91), wobei er damit keine Abwertung anderer Philosophen verband, sondern hervorhob, dass aufgrund des Gedankenreichtums kein Nachfolger ohne eine Auseinandersetzung mit Platon auskommen könne. Il s'agit d'une version largement remaniée des conférences que Whitehead donna aux « Gifford Lectures » d'Édimbourg en 1927-1928, sous le titre original Le Concept d'organisme. Cette œuvre, dans laquelle Whitehead rassemble sa philosophie spéculative, fait partie de ses travaux principaux, avec La science et le monde moderne (1925) et Aventures d'idées (1933). Elle fait suite à sa longue collaboration avec Bertrand Russell qui mena à leur coécriture des Principia Mathematica. Elle traite de questions très sophistiquées de métaphysique, d'ontologie et d'épistémologie. Whitehead y jette les bases de son « principe ontologique », rejetant le dualisme corps-esprit. Il vise à construire une cosmologie capable de rendre compte d'un univers en devenir, c'est-à-dire en perpétuel processus de transformation.
