Protosiren is an extinct early genus of the order Sirenia. Protosiren existed throughout the Lutetian to Priabonian stages of the Middle Eocene. Fossils have been found in the far-flung locations like the United States (South Carolina, North Carolina and Florida), Africa (Egypt), Europe (France, Germany and Hungary) and Asia (India and Pakistan). So far, five species have been named. From comparative anatomy and chronological order, it has been suggested that P. fraasi, P. sattaensis and P. smithae represent an ancestor-descendant lineage. P. eothene is the oldest and smallest species.

L'animale, ritrovato in varie zone del mare della Tetide (dall'Egitto ad India e Pakistan), è noto sulla base di fossili di crani e scheletri parziali. È facilmente riconoscibile dalle altre forme perché le sue vertebre toraciche hanno una grande forma ovale detta a "keyhole" (buco della serratura) con i supporti neurali a forma di canale. Le superfici delle costole sono irregolari e non lisce e questo indica che sono state collegate esclusivamente da legamenti o cartilagine flessibile piuttosto che da articolazioni sinoviali. Protosiren è rappresentato da tre specie. La prima, Protosiren fraasi, è stata descritta da Abel nel 1907 sulla base di un cranio ben conservato ed alcuni resti postcraniali: i fossili sono stati trovati tra il calcare di vicino al Cairo in Egitto e datati al medio Luteziano (inizio e metà Eocene, 45-40 milioni di anni fa). La seconda specie, Protosiren smithae, è stata descritta da Domming e Gingerich nel 1994 sulla base di fossili di crani di dimensioni superiori rispetto alla specie precedente: tutti i fossili fin qui rinvenuti provengono dalla famosa "Valle delle balene" (o ) situata al margine occidentale della depressione di El Fayum in Egitto e datato ai periodi Bartoniano e Priaboniano (corrispondenti al medio e tardo Eocene, 37-36 milioni di anni fa).La terza specie infine, Protosiren sattaensis, è stata descritta ancora da Gingerich nel 1995, ha grandi dimensioni (soprattutto femori più lunghi) e sembra leggermente più primitiva della precedente. Deze zeekoe had nog wel achterpoten, maar deze waren klein met zwakke sacro-iliacale gewrichten, wat wijst op een voornamelijk aquatische leefwijze. Protosiren voedde zich met zeegras en zoetwaterplanten.
