Inside of it, Alinsky compiled the lessons he had learned throughout his experiences of community organizing from 1939 to 1971. He targeted these lessons at the current, new generation of radicals. Divided into ten chapters, Rules for Radicals provides ten lessons on how a community organizer can accomplish the goal of successfully uniting people into an active grassroots organization with the power to effect change on a variety of issues. Though targeted at community organization, these chapters also touch on other issues that range from ethics, education, communication, and symbol construction and political philosophy. Though published for the new generation of counterculture-era organizers in 1971, Alinsky's principles have been applied by numerous government, labor, community, and congregation-based organizations, and the main themes of his organizational methods have been recurring elements in political campaigns in recent years. Het werd gepubliceerd in 1971 vlak voor zijn dood in juni 1972. Rules for Radicals werd naar het Nederlands vertaald door Marjan Fleischer en in 1974 gepubliceerd door Uitgeverij Bert Bakker. Het doel van het boek was om hulp te bieden aan toekomstige communautaire organisatoren bij het verenigen van gemeenschappen met lage inkomens om voor hen meer sociale, politieke, juridische en economische macht te verkrijgen. Alinsky verwerkt hierin de lessen en ervaringen die hij heeft opgedaan tijdens zijn werk als communautair organisator tussen 1939 en 1971 en richtte deze lessen op de huidige en nieuwe generaties van links-radicalen.
