Mabel Stanford nacida Janice Busby, en Oregón en 1903, se mudó a San Francisco en 1924. De 1940 a 1949, fue la madam de un burdel de lujo en 1144 Pine Street en Nob Hill en una casa diseñada por el prestigioso arquitecto Stanford White. Adoptó el apellido como uno de sus muchos seudónimos además de Mabel Busby.
