Kobia ist verheiratet und hat vier Kinder. Er ist Mitglied des Ehrenschutzkomitee der Internationalen Koordination für die Dekade für eine Kultur des Friedens und der Gewaltfreiheit für die Kinder der Welt (2001–2010). Er war von 2004 bis 2009 Generalsekretär des Ökumenischen Rates der Kirchen. Am 27. August 2009 hat die ÖRK-Vollversammlung den norwegischen Pfarrer Olav Fykse Tveit zum Nachfolger Kobias gewählt. In 2010, Kobia was appointed Ecumenical Special Envoy to Sudan by the All Africa Conference of Churches (AACC). Kobia is married to Ruth, and they have two daughters, Kaburo and Nkatha, and two sons, Mwenda and Mutua.
