Scum (englisch für „Abschaum“) ist das Debütalbum der britischen Grindcore-Band Napalm Death aus dem Jahre 1987. Es gilt als eines der bedeutendsten Alben dieses Genres. Die Aufnahmen zur A-Seite und zur B-Seite der Schallplatte, zwischen denen rund ein Jahr lag, fanden in unterschiedlichen Besetzungen statt. Als einziger Musiker wirkte Schlagzeuger Mick Harris an beiden Seiten mit. Durch die verschiedenen Besetzungen unterscheidet sich die Musik auf beiden Seiten im Gesang und in der Klangfarbe der E-Gitarren. Während sich die Lieder der A-Seite ausschließlich am Hardcore-Punk und Anarcho-Punk orientieren, kamen auf der B-Seite durch die tiefer gestimmten E-Gitarren für den Metal typische Elemente hinzu und der Gesang war stärker verfremdet. Von dem Album wurden im Jahr der Veröffentlichung mehr als 10.000 Stück verkauft und es erreichte Platz 8 der UK Indie Charts. (de)

Scum is the debut studio album by English grindcore band Napalm Death, released on 1 July 1987 by Earache Records. The two sides of the record were recorded by two different lineups in sessions separated by about a year; the only musician in both incarnations was drummer Mick Harris. The two sides are very different, and the two taken together serve to bridge stylistic elements of heavy metal and punk rock. While the songs on the A-side are influenced heavily by hardcore punk and anarcho-punk, the vocals and lower-tuned electric guitars on the B-side anticipate subsequent developments in extreme metal.Loudwire put it in the list of the best 10 metal albums of 1987. Scum sold over 10,000 copies in its first year of release, reaching number eight on the UK Indie chart. Since then, it has become known as a formative release in the grindcore genre. In 2005, Scum was voted the 50th best British album of all time by Kerrang! readers, and in 2009, it was ranked number five in Terrorizer's list of essential European grindcore albums; it is also listed in Robert Dimery's book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. Il lato A del disco venne registrato per 50 Sterline nell'agosto del 1986 e inizialmente doveva far parte di uno split album. Dopo alcuni cambi di formazione, il secondo lato venne registrato nel maggio del 1987 ai Rich Bitch Studios, dove era stata registrata anche la prima metà. Entrambi i lati vennero pubblicati in un unico lavoro dalla Earache Records nel luglio dello stesso anno. La copertina venne disegnata da Jeff Walker (compagno di Bill Steer nei Carcass). (it)
