On April 10, 1990, Phillip Pannell, an African-American teenager, was shot and killed by police officer Gary Spath in Teaneck, New Jersey. Pannell and a group of other teenagers was running from police when he was shot in the back with his hands raised. Spath was later charged and acquitted on charges of manslaughter. The case created controversy over allegations of racial profiling and police brutality.
