Firestone argues that the "sexual class system" predates and runs deeper than any other form of oppression, and that the eradication of sexism will require a radical reordering of society: "The first women are fleeing the massacre, and, shaking and tottering, are beginning to find each other. ... This is painful: no matter how many levels of consciousness one reaches, the problem always goes deeper. It is everywhere. ... feminists have to question, not just all of Western culture, but the organization of culture itself, and further, even the very organization of nature." The goal of the feminist revolution, she wrote, must be "not just the elimination of male privilege but of the sex distinction itself" so that genital differences no longer have cultural significance. The Dialectic of Sex är ett försök att skapa en teoretiskt hållbar grund för en ny revolutionär rörelse, radikalfeminismen. Firestones huvudtes är att alla revolutionära försök som gjorts, till exempel i Sovjetunionen eller Kina, misslyckats med att frigöra mänskligheten därför att de inskränkt sig till socialismen och inte tagit steget fullt ut med att införliva den sexuella revolutionen och kulturrevolutionen i det revolutionära programmet. Firestone gör upp med Karl Marx och Friedrich Engels, grundarna av marxismen, för deras okunnighet och likgiltighet inför kvinnans situation och revolutionära potential, men använder sig samtidigt deras historiska materialism i sina egna analyser. Samtidigt ger hon en helt ny tillämpning åt Sigmund Freuds teorier om människans psykologi genom att frånta dem dess psykologiska perspektiv och sätta dem i ett sammanhang av ett maktperspektiv såväl som den marxistiska idén om människans samverkande natur.
