He began his football career in the small club, Åstorps IF, which he represented from age ten in 1958 until 1969. In 1970, he transferred to Landskrona BoIS, where he contributed to the promotion of this club to the Swedish top league, Allsvenskan, already during his first season for the club. He scored the opening goal in the first qualifying match (of three), against Sandvikens IF in front of 15 685 attenders at Landskrona IP. Two seasons later "Gyxa" and his Landskrona BoIS won the Swedish Cup. He also contributed to the clubs Allsvenskan bronze medals in 1975 and 1976. In the beginning of his time in BoIS, he played forward together with Sonny Johansson and Dan Brzokoupil. During his two last seasons for Landskrona BoIS, he played as midfielder instead. He represented Landskrona BoIS at 326 occasions and scored 56 goals. After the 1978 season he stepped down and played for the small club Kågeröds BIF His nickname was not related to football; as a young kid he could simply not pronounce his surname and "Gustafsson" became "Gyxa", and it is under that nickname he is remembered among the Landskrona BoIS supporters. He is still a frequent guest at Landskrona BoIS' home games. In the autumn of 2013 he was one of the most well-known people who signed a successful protest against introducing artificial turf at his former home ground as footballer. He is the father of the current coach at IFK Norrköping, Jens Gustafsson. Han användes huvudsakligen som högerytter. Gyxas karriär inleddes i moderklubben Åstorps IF, där han redan som 16-åring debuterade i A-laget 1964. År 1970 värvade BoIS honom och det kom att bli en lyckad affär. "Gyxa" fick vara med om allsvenskt avancemang år 1970 och därefter åtta år med Landskrona i högsta serien. Han kom att bilda ett giftigt anfallspar i klubben tillsammans med den tunge centertanken Sonny Johansson. Bland några av Gyxas mera framstående insatser kan nämnas att han gjorde ett av de två målen i allsvenska kvalmatchen mot Sandviken 1970 och att han avgjorde två 2-1-derbyn i rad mot Malmö FF på Landskrona IP 1971 och 1972. På meritlistan i övrigt står ett cupguld 1972 och två allsvenska brons 1975 och 1976 samt 326 matcher och 56 mål totalt i BoIS. Tommy "Gyxa" Gustafsson fortsatte med fotbollen även efter karriärens absoluta topp. Han varvade ner i Kågeröds BoIF 1979-1980 och blev därefter lagledare, juniortränare och styrelseledamot i Landskrona. Bland övriga klubbar han representerat kan nämnas Svalövs BK 1985-1986, Åstorps IF 1987-1988, Nyvångs IF 1991, Perstorps SK 1992, Klippans BK 1993-1994, Svalövs BK 1995 och Axelvolds IK 1996-2003.
