Die United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) ist eine britische Organisation, die sich mit der Nutzung der Kernenergie befasst. Die ursprünglich rein staatliche Institution wurde in den letzten Jahren teilweise privatisiert. Die UKAEA mit Sitz in Abingdon-on-Thames wurde 1954 gegründet und war der Pionier bei der Entwicklung der Kernenergie im Vereinigten Königreich Großbritannien und Nordirland. Heute besteht die Hauptaufgabe in der Stilllegung der älteren Kernkraftwerke und radioaktiver Einrichtungen unter Aufsicht der Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, die für die britischen Forschungs- und Entwicklungsprogramme genutzt worden waren. Ein Pilotprojekt zur Demonstration der Machbarkeit der Stilllegung ist der von der EU finanziell unterstützte Rückbau des Windscale Advanced Gas-cooled Reactor (WAGR), der 1962 in Betrieb gegangen war. La autoridad promovió el desarrollo de la energía nuclear, supervisando el desarrollo pacífico de la tecnología nuclear y realizando abundante investigación científica. En los últimos años 80 UKAEA pasó a actuar en la modalidad de trading fund (fondo comercial), en la que debe desenvolverse como si se tratara de una empresa comercial. En los años ‘90, la Autoridad fue dividida en dos: sus actividades más comerciales se traspasaron a la compañía privada , que desde entonces ha cotizado en la Bolsa de Londres, mientras que las directamente relacionadas con obligaciones nucleares que pudieran necesitar ser desmanteladas quedaron retenidas. Su nuevo papel es el de desmantelar las instalaciones nucleares utilizadas para el programa de investigación y desarrollo del Reino Unido y restaurar el entorno de sus emplazamientos. Desde los primeros años 1990, UKAEA ha culminado más tareas de desmantelado que nadie en Europa, y ha alcanzado un éxito considerable en la regeneración de anteriores emplazamientos nucleares para su uso comercial. The United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority is a UK government research organisation responsible for the development of fusion energy. It is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). The authority focuses on United Kingdom and European fusion energy research programmes at Culham in Oxfordshire, including the world's most powerful operating fusion device, the Joint European Torus (JET). The research aims to develop fusion power as a commercially viable, environmentally responsible energy source for the future. A record 59 megajoules of sustained fusion energy was demonstrated by scientists and engineers working on JET in December 2021. United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority owns the Culham Science Centre and has a stake in the Harwell Campus, and is involved in the development of both sites as locations for science and innovation-based business. On its formation in 1954, the authority was responsible for the United Kingdom's entire nuclear programme, both civil and defence, as well as the policing of nuclear sites. It made pioneering developments in nuclear (fission) power, overseeing the development of nuclear technology and performing much scientific research. However, since the early 1970s its areas of work have been gradually reduced, with functions transferred to other government organisations as well as to the private sector. UKAEA has also been involved in undertaking safety and reliability assessments for outside bodies, due to its long running experience in such work within the nuclear field. (en)
