He was the founder of the Whitsett Institute, an academy for the education of young men in Guilford County, North Carolina. The town of Whitsett grew up around the Institute. He was a graduate of the University of North Carolina and earned his Ph. D. at North Carolina College in Mt. Pleasant, North Carolina.
