- Finnland (finnisch Suomi?/i [ˈsuɔmi], schwedisch Finland [ˈfɪnland]), amtlich Republik Finnland (finn. Suomen tasavalta, schwed. Republiken Finland), ist eine parlamentarische Republik in Nordeuropa und seit 1995 Mitglied der Europäischen Union. Finnland grenzt an Schweden, Norwegen, Russland und die Ostsee. Mit 5,4 Millionen Einwohnern auf einer Fläche fast so groß wie Deutschland gehört Finnland zu den am dünnsten besiedelten Ländern Europas. Ein großer Teil der Bevölkerung konzentriert sich auf den Süden des Landes mit der Hauptstadt Helsinki, sowie auf die Großstädte Espoo, Tampere, Vantaa, Oulu und Turku. Die beiden offiziellen Landessprachen sind Finnisch und Schwedisch. 92 % der Bevölkerung sind finnisch-, 6 % schwedischsprachig. Die schwedischsprachige Inselgruppe Åland hat einen weitreichenden Autonomiestatus. Das Gebiet Finnlands, das seit Jahrtausenden dünn besiedelt war, trat mit der Eingliederung in das Schwedische Reich ab dem 12. Jahrhundert in die historische Zeit ein. Es blieb für viele Jahrhunderte integraler Teil Schwedens, bis es 1809 an Russland abgetreten wurde, unter dessen Herrschaft sich Finnland als Nation entwickelte. 1917 erlangte das Land die staatliche Unabhängigkeit.
