Äthiopien, dessen NOK, das Ethiopian Olympic Committee, 1948 gegründet und 1954 vom IOC anerkannt wurde, nimmt seit 1956 an Olympischen Sommerspielen teil. 1976 folgte Äthiopien dem afrikanischen Boykott der Spiele von Montreal. 1984 und 1988 wurde auf eine Teilnahme verzichtet. 2006 nahm Äthiopien erstmals an Winterspielen teil. Insgesamt wurden 207 Teilnehmer entsandt, davon 44 Frauen. 45 Medaillen konnten äthiopische Sportler gewinnen. Ohne Ausnahme wurden die Medaillen in der Leichtathletik gewonnen, ausschließlich in Laufdisziplinen. Erster Medaillengewinner und gleichzeitig erster Olympiasieger war 1960 der Marathonläufer Abebe Bikila. Die erste Frau, die für Äthiopien eine Medaille gewann (und zugleich erste Olympiasiegerin wurde), war 1992 Derartu Tulu, die über 10.000 Meter gewann. Am erfolgreichsten schnitt Tirunesh Dibaba ab, die zwischen 2004 und 2012 drei Mal Gold und zwei Mal Bronze gewinnen konnte. 1980 nahm mit der 16-jährigen Leichtathletin Fantaye Sirak die jüngste Sportlerin Äthiopiens teil. Ältester Teilnehmer war 1972 Mamo Wolde, der im Alter von 40 Jahren eine Bronzemedaille im Marathonlauf gewann. (de)
