Rudolf Schieffer (* 31. Januar 1947 in Mainz) ist ein deutscher Historiker und war von 1994 bis 2012 Präsident der Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH). Der Sohn des Historikers Theodor Schieffer besuchte von 1953 bis 1966 Schulen in Mainz und Bad Godesberg. Das Abitur legte er 1966 am Aloisiuskolleg in Bad Godesberg ab. Er studierte von Sommersemester 1966 bis Sommersemester 1971 Geschichte und Latein an den Universitäten Bonn und Marburg. Nach der ersten Staatsprüfung 1971 in Bonn für das höhere Lehramt wurde er dort 1975 bei Eugen Ewig über Die Entstehung von Domkapiteln in Deutschland promoviert. Von 1971 bis 1975 war er wissenschaftlicher Angestellter im DFG-Projekt „Spätantike Reichskonzilien“ bei Johannes Straub in Bonn. Von 1975 bis 1980 war er wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter der Monumenta Germaniae Historica (MGH). Von 1976 bis 1979 war Schieffer Lehrbeauftragter für Historische Hilfswissenschaften an der Universität Regensburg. Im Jahr 1979 erfolgte dort seine Habilitation über Die Entstehung des päpstlichen Investiturverbots für den deutschen König. Ab 1980 war er Professor für Mittelalterliche und Neuere Geschichte an der Universität Bonn, bevor er 1994 an die Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in München ging und die Leitung der MGH übernahm. Schieffers wissenschaftliche Arbeitsschwerpunkte sind die politische Geschichte sowie die Kirchen- und Rechtsgeschichte von der Spätantike bis zum Hochmittelalter, die Quellenkunde und die Textedition. Schieffer konnte nachweisen, dass das im päpstlichen Archiv aufbewahrte Briefregister des Papstes Gregor VII. entgegen bisheriger Behauptungen tatsächlich das Original darstellt. Schieffer gilt als Spezialist für die Karolingerzeit. Sein erstmals 1992 erschienenes Werk Die Karolinger gilt als Standardwerk zur Geschichte der Karolingerzeit und wurde bis 2014 fünfmal aufgelegt. Schieffer ist der Verfasser des Bandes über die Karolinger der neuesten Ausgabe des klassischen Lehrbuchs der deutschen Geschichte, des „Gebhardt“. Schieffer legte 1980 eine kommentierte Edition des Traktats De ordine palatii von Erzbischof Hinkmar von Reims vor. Seine Forschungen sorgten für ein besseres Verständnis über den Verlauf des Investiturstreites. Über Papst Gregor VII. legte er 2010 eine knappe Biographie vor. Schieffer war mit Johannes Fried von 1994 bis zum Erscheinen des Heftes 68/2 (2012) langjähriger Herausgeber des Deutschen Archivs für Erforschung des Mittelalters, einer der angesehensten mediävistischen Fachzeitschriften. Schieffer ist Mitglied der Gesellschaft für Rheinische Geschichtskunde (seit 1981), Mitglied der Zentraldirektion der Monumenta Germaniae Historica (seit 1983), ordentliches Mitglied der Nordrhein-Westfälischen Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Künste (seit 1992), Mitglied der Historischen Kommission bei der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (1994), corresponding fellow der Royal Historical Society (seit 1995), corresponding fellow der Medieval Academy of America (seit 1997), Mitglied des Konstanzer Arbeitskreises für mittelalterliche Geschichte (seit 1992), korrespondierendes Mitglied der Österreichischen Akademie der Wissenschaften (seit 1998), Mitglied der Akademie gemeinnütziger Wissenschaften zu Erfurt (seit 1998), korrespondierendes Mitglied der Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Göttingen (seit 2003) und ist Socio straniero der Accademia dei Lincei (seit 2004). Im Jahr 2008 wurde ihm von der Stadt Magdeburg der Eike-von-Repgow-Preis für seine Forschungen zur mittelalterlichen Geschichte Mitteldeutschlands verliehen. Im selben Jahr wurde Schieffer mit dem Winfried-Preis von der Stadt Fulda für die Erforschung des Lebens und Wirkens des Hl. Bonifatius geehrt. Zu seinen Schülern gehören u.a. Bernd Schütte, Claudia Zey, Caspar Ehlers, Jochen Johrendt, Martina Hartmann und Alheydis Plassmann. (de)
