Eine Sonderwirtschaftszone ist ein meist räumlich abgegrenztes geographisches Gebiet innerhalb eines Staates, für das rechtliche und administrative Erleichterungen für Investoren bestehen. Diese betreffen in der Regel das Zoll- und Steuerrecht, mitunter aber auch andere Rechtsgebiete wie Umwelt-, Arbeits- oder Sozialrecht. Unterschieden werden Industrieparks (industrial parks), Freihandelszonen (free trade zones, kurz FTZ), Exporthandelszonen (export processing zones, kurz EPZ), Freiwirtschaftszonen (free economic zones, kurz FEZ), Zollfreigebiete (free ports) und Enterprise Zones (urban enterprise zones). Das Ziel der Einrichtung einer solchen Zone ist für gewöhnlich die Steigerung von in- und ausländischen Investitionen. Diese sollen auch für die Entwicklung des „Hinterlands“ wirtschaftliche und technologische Impulse setzen. Sonderwirtschaftszonen gibt es unter anderem in der Volksrepublik China, in Indien, Nordkorea, Uruguay, Russland, Vietnam, Moldawien, den Vereinigten Arabischen Emiraten und in Kasachstan. In den Trikont-Staaten wurden sie mit Hilfe der Weltbank seit den 1950er Jahren errichtet. Auch die ukrainische Stadt Slawutytsch, ein „Ersatz“ für die von der Katastrophe von Tschernobyl kontaminierte Stadt Prypjat, wurde zu einer Sonderwirtschaftszone erklärt. Die Einrichtung von Sonderwirtschaftszonen ist mit EU-Recht nicht vereinbar. Die in Polen ausgewiesenen Sonderwirtschaftszonen mussten die dort gewährten Steuervorteile bis Ende 2011 abschaffen. (de)
