The second earliest recorded born Melbourne VFL player behind Ned Sutton who was five months older, backman Healing debuted with the club in <1889> and remained with them as a centre-half back throughout the last years of the and into the new competition.
He initially retired before the <1897> season to concentrate on cycling before returning to the side early that year.
After his final retirement, Healing opened a bicycle store and grew the business into one of the largest of its type in Australia. In <1926> he diversified into auto parts.
