Handwritten letter from John Hancock to the Constitutional Convention of New York, dated June 17, 1776. In the letter, Hancock advises the Convention that the Continental Congress has received information suggesting that commander-in-chief of British forces, General William Howe, is planning an invasion of New York City, and that preparations should be made to defend the city. Howe ultimately launched his New York campaign in early July of 1776 and forced a retreat of General George Washington and the Continental Army in August following the Battle of Long Island. The letter is signed with Hancock's signature.
