EHA ANNUAL MEETING
Join us in Philadelphia for the 2025 Annual Meeting
The next EHA conference will take place September 5-7, 2025 at the Loews Philadelphia hotel housed in the historic Philadelphia Savings Fund Society (PSFS) building in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – home of the Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and hundreds more early American historical sites and archives. President Paul Rhode invites you to join us as we meet for the 85th meeting of the Economic History Association.
More information is coming soon, alongside details about the hotel rate, conference registration, and other travel details. The Call for Paper Proposals is now open and will close January 31, 2025. Later we will open the call for Posters. Keep checking back for more as we update the website regularly.
Information and Communications in Economic History
“Information and Communications in Economic History” is the theme of the 2025 meeting. The theme is inspired in part by Allan Pred’s classic work on the Urban Growth and the Circulation of Information and by the location of the meetings in Philadelphia, headquarters and key hub of the first postal system in the United States.
“Spreading the news” helped encourage the creation and diffusion of new technologies, stimulated market integration and population flows, and fostered the dissemination of new social values and norms. But information flows and their control also re-enforced systems of oppression. Economic historians, moreover, are familiar with how the structure and content of information was generated in the past conditions and constrains what we can learn today. The surviving quantitative data and qualitative evidence are selected, with possible biases; and they are structured in ways reflecting past concerns and capabilities.
Research exploring how information flows and communication systems of the past impact our current understanding also fits within the conference theme, as does work engaging with and reflecting on the ongoing information explosion in economic history.

THE 2023 ECONOMIC SCIENCES LAUREATE
Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences
Congratulations to this year’s economic sciences laureate, Claudia Goldin, who provided the first comprehensive account of women’s earnings and labour market participation through the centuries. Claudia is a Harvard Professor and an EHA Member.
By trawling through the archives and compiling and correcting historical data, Goldin has been able to present new and often surprising facts. The fact that women’s choices have often been, and remain, limited by marriage and responsibility for the home and family is at the heart of her analyses and explanatory models.
Her insights reach far outside the borders of the US and similar patterns have been observed in many other countries. Her research brings us a better understanding of the labour markets of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
