Sus epítetos habituales son Santiago o Jacobo, el hermano del Señor y Santiago el Justo. La mayoría está de acuerdo que no se debe confundir con Santiago, hijo de Zebedeo. En la Biblia es llamado Jacobo o Santiago, derivación de «San Jacobo» (Sancti Iacob).
