Descendants of Anthony* Henckel
Generation No. 6
7. Rev. Anthony* Jacob 6 Henckel (Georg*5, Matthias*4, Casper*3, Ludwig*2, Anthony*1)37 was born Bef. 27 October 1668 in Mehrenberg, Hesse (Germany)38,39,40, and died 12 August 1728 in Near Germantown, Pennsylvania41.He married Maria* Elisabetha Dentzer42 25 April 1692 in Kirchain, Germany42,43, daughter of Johann* Dentzer and Barbara* Giebel. She was born Bef. 26 May 1672 in Birkenau, Odenwald, Germany43,44, and died 23 January 1743/44 in Germantown, Pennsylvania44.
Notes for Rev. Anthony* Jacob Henckel:
"Was pastor at Eschelbronn (1692-1695), Daudensell and Breitenbronn (1695-1714), and Neckargemund (1714-1717).Also during this period served congregations at Monchszell and Zuzenhousen. After several disputes with Roman Catholic church authorities and with the parish patron, decided at the age of forty-nine to take his family to Pennsylvania. There is evidence that some of his parishioners or former parishioners may have decided to go along.Date of last pastoral act a Neckargemund was June 3, 1717.Probably reached Pennsylvania in September 1717, when three vessels are known to have arrived.
Settled in New Hanover township, Montgomery County, about one and one-half miles north of the present New Hanover Lutheran church. Spent the rest of his life on the 250 acres of land which he purchased in 1717 or early 1718.
Evidence of his presence in Montgomery County includes the following.First, the deed for the purchase on April 16, 1718 by his son in law Valentine Geiger, of 250 acres, described as adjoining land of Anthony Jacob Henkel.Second his signature (heading the list of forty) on a petition asking for a road through Falkner Swamp, and which was presented to the Philadelphia County Quarter Sessions Court in March 1723.Third his signature on a petition, dated April 17, 1728, from the frontier inhabitants of the county, asking for protection against threatened Indian attacks.
Soon after arriving in late 1717, Henkel resumed his ministry. Organized the first German Lutheran congregation in Pennsylvania at New Hanover.Accurate information about his pastoral activity is scanty because no private register or congregational records that may have kept are know to have survived.Lack of such records is perplexing because of his practice of keeping very careful and complete records in Europe.
Evidence of his pastoral activity in Pennsylvania includes the following.First, the survey in 1719 of forty-nine acres of land for the New Hanover church.Second, his arrest on order of the Assembly in 1725, charged with performing marriages in violation of the laws of the province, because he was an alien.Third, the request of William Christopher Berkenmeyer, minister in New York, addressed in May 1727 to the Swedish Lutheran pastors of Pennsylvania, asking for an investigating of whether Henkel "had assumed the holy office" in Pennsylvania "on his own responsibility and not by the approval or authority of anyone else," and whether he had taken it upon himself to ordain John Bernard van Dieren to the ministry.Fourth, the statement of Philip Boehm in 1730 that George Michael Weiss, several years before, had announced at Skippack and Falkner Swamp "through the Lutheran minister, Mr. Henkel, now deceased" that he would be preaching in those places-the assumption being that Henkel was also preaching there.Fifth, the statement of Henry Melchior Muhlenberg in his obituary of Valentine Geiger, who died in 1762 at New Hanover, that Geiger had lived in this country for forty-five years, and that he had come with his father in law Reverend Henkel, "who at the beginning of the colony held divine services for some years."
Organized the Lutheran congregation at New Hanover.May have organized those at the Trappe, New Goshenhoppen, Germantown, and Philadelphia.Visited Lutherans in the Tulpehocken settlement, urging them to build their first church, which they did in 1727.May have visited Lutherans in other settlements-for example, Conestoga-in much the same way that Philip Boehm was visiting Reformed at about the same time. Boehm began conducting services in 1720 and administering the sacraments in 1725.
On August 12, 1728, while on his way home from Philadelphia, fell from his horse.Either sustained serious injuries in the fall or was perhaps stricken before he fell.Believing death was near, made a nuncupative, or spoken will.Died on the same day.Buried at Germantown.Five days later, witnesses to his will declared "that the testator Anthony Jacob Henkel, on the twelfth day of this instant August fell off his horse on the Road from Philadelphia to his house in Hanover Township, which disabled him, and he was carried to the house of the deponent Herman Groothousen in the Manor of Springfield, where the testator lying very ill, bid the deponents take notice ...[of what he was saying],and the deponents do day that the said testator at the time of his speaking the said nuncupative will was of sound mind, memory, and understanding, to the best of their knowledge."Letters of administration were granted to his widow, Maria Elizabeth on September 14, 1728.
Anthony Jacob Henkel must be regarded as the founder of the German Lutheran church in the Pennsylvania field. For ten or eleven years he was the only known German Lutheran pastor in the province. What little evidence there is of his pastoral activity suggests that he devoted as much time and energy to it as he could. From Henkel and his wife there has descended a large and distinguished progeny, including many ministers and other professional people.
