Thomas Sunderland

SUNDERLAND, Thomas, jurist, born in Terre Haute, Indiana, in 1821; died in New York city, 9 October, 1886. He studied law early in life, and went to California during the gold excitement of 1849. After securing a large fortune, he engaged in the practice of his profession, and became chief justice of the supreme court of California. He resided in Nevada for some time, and was urged ineffectually to become Democratic candidate for United States senator from that state. He served for many years in the California legislature, and was an active member of the Scientific society of San Francisco.
