Scope and Contents

Collection contains 142 photographs of the Weir family and friends from approximately 1840 to 1940, including French, German, English, and American impressionist painters. Includes photographs taken by Samuel Morse, Jessie Tarbox Beals, George C. Cox, and Pirie MacDonald. Photographs include portraits, landscapes, and group photographs of leisure activities. A majority of the photographs are centered around Julian Alden Weir. Also includes three photograph albums of European art and architecture.

Permission to publish material from the Weir family photographs must be obtained from the Supervisor of Reference Services and/or the L. Tom Perry Special Collections Board of Curators.

Biographical note

The Weir family included Robert Walter Weir (1803-1889), professor of drawing; his first wife Louisa Ferguson (d. 1845); his second wife Susan Martha Bayard; and their children, especially John Ferguson Weir (1841-1926), director of Fine Arts, Yale; and Julian Alden Weir (1852-1919), artist.
