- L'équipe du Costa Rica de football est constituée par une sélection des meilleurs joueurs costariciens représentant leur pays en football masculin. Elle est sous l'égide de la Fédération costaricienne de football (Federación Costarricense de Fútbol). La « Sele » (diminutif de Selección), comme elle est surnommée, participe à cinq phases finales de Coupe du monde. Auteur d'un parcours surprenant à la Coupe du monde 1990, où elle atteint le 2e tour de la compétition sous le commandement de l'entraîneur serbe Bora Milutinović, elle ne peut franchir le 1er tour lors de ses deux présentations suivantes en 2002 et 2006. Les Ticos surprennent à nouveau en 2014 au Brésil : sortis premiers d'un groupe comprenant également trois anciens champions du monde (Uruguay, Italie et Angleterre), ils battent la Grèce en huitième de finale et atteignent pour la première fois un quart de finale de Mondial, instance où ils sont éliminés par les Pays-Bas après la séance de tirs au but. Les Ticos une nouvelle fois qualifés pour la Coupe du monde 2018 en Russie, ne se qualifient pas pour le second tour. La meilleure performance du Costa Rica en Gold Cup est une place de finaliste en 2002 même s'il avait auparavant remporté trois éditions de la Coupe des nations de la CONCACAF – ancêtre de la Gold Cup – en 1963, 1969 et 1989 ainsi que sept éditions de la Coupe CCCF (voir section résultats). Il gagne à huit reprises la Coupe UNCAF des nations ce qui fait du Costa Rica le pays le plus titré d'Amérique centrale. Il est invité à participer à cinq éditions de la Copa América, atteignant les quarts de finale en 2001 et 2004. L'équipe du Costa Rica joue généralement ses rencontres à domicile au stade national de la capitale San José. Elle a atteint son meilleur classement FIFA en février 2015 (13e rang mondial et 1er de sa confédération). (fr)
